I was once a shy kid, hiding from the world, only to discover my passion for connection as an adult. I studied subjects that didn’t light my soul, pushed by others’ expectations, until I found my true calling in fields that set my heart ablaze. In relationships, I chased or fled, caught in a dance of fear and desire, never quite finding balance.
For years, I kept people at arm’s length when they got too close, yet clung to them when they drifted away. My tolerance for risk, for change, for life, was locked in a rigid pattern—until I decided to dig deeper. I began to ask the hard questions:
How many times had I repeated the same behaviors, expecting different results?
How long had I been living on unconscious autopilot?
How much of my life was being shaped by past experiences, silently steering my future?
The answer? Far too much.
The Trap of Nice Guy Syndrome and an Unregulated Nervous System
Like many men, I fell into the trap of Nice Guy Syndrome—a pattern where I sought approval by pleasing others, hiding my own needs and desires. I was people-pleasing, but I wasn’t getting the outcomes I wanted—no respect, no real connection, just resentment and exhaustion.
At the same time, I didn’t know how to regulate my nervous system.
My body was stuck in a cycle of stress and anxiety, with my heart racing and my mind on edge, unable to find calm or clarity.
Understanding the science behind these behaviors was transformative. Neurologically, people-pleasing is tied to heightened cortisol levels and suppressed testosterone, driven by fear-based responses in the amygdala and reward-seeking loops in the brain’s dopamine system.
An unregulated nervous system, meanwhile, keeps the body in a constant state of fight-or-flight, disrupting emotional balance and decision-making.
By learning how the vagus nerve and somatic practices can reset the nervous system, and how to rewire approval-seeking behaviors, I broke free, set boundaries, and reclaimed my authentic self—skills I now teach to help men find peace and power.
